Just Start: Why Your Environment Sets the Tone for Change¶
If you’re reading this, chances are you’re ready to make a change. Maybe it’s your health, your fitness, or just the feeling that you’ve let things slide for too long. Whatever it is, I’m here to tell you: just start. I say this as someone who has recently gone through some of these changes. It’s easy to get out of good habits and fall into a routine of just going to work and forgetting the little things.
But don’t start with the gym or a complicated meal plan. Start with your surroundings.
Take a good look around your house. Is it spotless? Probably not. And that’s okay—because step one is fixing that.
Clean Your Space, Clear Your Mind¶
A cluttered environment leads to a cluttered mind. If your house is in chaos, it’s hard to focus on yourself. Here’s how to start:
-
Make Your Bed:
Sounds small, right? But this one act sets the tone for the day. A made bed is a win, and you need every win you can get right now. -
Empty the Sink:
Piles of dishes scream “I’ll do it later.” No—do it now. A clean sink is a simple but powerful way to start taking control. -
Deep Clean the Bathroom:
Scrub the shower, wipe the mirrors, clean the toilet, and organize your toiletries. Make your bathroom a place you actually want to be in. -
Sweep, Mop, and Declutter:
Floors need love, too. Sweep and mop every room, and while you’re at it, get rid of anything you don’t need. -
Wash Your Bedding:
If you’ve been washing your sheets once a month, it’s time to step up. Weekly washes make a huge difference in how you sleep and feel.
If all this sounds overwhelming, consider taking a day off work and just doing it. Seriously. You can’t get yourself in order until your environment is in order.
Clean Yourself Up¶
Your surroundings are only part of the equation. The next step is you.
-
Get a Haircut:
There’s nothing like a fresh cut to make you feel sharp and ready to tackle the world. -
Shave or Trim Your Beard:
Whatever your style, keep it clean. When you look good, you feel good. -
Shower Like You Mean It:
Not a quick rinse. Take your time. Scrub. Use that nice shampoo you’ve been saving. This is about treating yourself like you matter.
Why This Matters¶
You can’t build something great on a shaky foundation. A clean house and a clean appearance aren’t just about aesthetics—they’re about mindset. They’re the proof that you’re serious about change.
Once your environment is in order, you’ll find it easier to focus on bigger goals: eating better, exercising, and taking care of your mental health. But until then, this is where you start.
No excuses. No waiting for the “perfect time.” Just start.
